Good afternoon everyone. My name is Carol Brown. I am here today to announce that I am running for the 46th District of the Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska is a great place to live. I consider it a privilege to have been born here in Nebraska and that my Husband of 32 years and I have been able to raise our children in the greatest city of our state right here in Lincoln. The 46th legislative district has been well represented by Senator David Landis for the past 27 years. Following in his footsteps is an honor and large task for anyone. It will take committed effective leadership. I want to be and believe that I am that person. Here is a little bit about myself. I was born and raised on a farm in the Northeast part of the state and I am the second to the youngest of 13 brothers and sisters. I went to school in a one-room schoolhouse until 3rd grade, when my brothers and sisters and I were bused into town to attend school. I know rural Nebraska. I came to Lincoln in 1971 and worked at the Veterans Hospital until I married my husband John. I was employed in the healthcare industry for 20 years. Shortly after we married, we moved to Pennsylvania where John managed a jewelry store but we missed Nebraska and returned back to Northeast Lincoln and have been here ever since. John is a graduate of Northeast High School. John's family lived in Northeast Lincoln and this is where we feel like we belong. I know Northeast Lincoln. John and I have lived in the 46th District for over 19 years and we own a small business in the 46th District. I know what it takes to run a business. John and I have two sons: J.R. is 25 years old, and currently deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Spencer 19, is a student at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. I am running for Legislature because I care about Lincoln and the residents here. I live, work and breath to protect the quality of life we enjoy in Lincoln's neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods and the families in them are the backbone of this City and State. People know me as a tireless advocate for children, families and neighborhoods and I'm ready to take that energy to the Nebraska Legislature. My focus will be to preserve, protect and promote their interests. There are many issues for State Senators in the Nebraska Unicameral to deal with. As your next State Senator of the 46th district here are a few that I plan to preserve, promote and protect. I want to Preserve Medicare/Medicaid and equitable healthcare coverage. People should have access to good medical care. People should not have to mortgage their homes to provide for medical care. People should not be penalized when they use their healthcare plans for preventative care. People should not have to be brain surgeons to understand purchasing their healthcare policies and should be able to get what coverage they are paying for. Small businesses should be able to pool their resources to bring down the costs of their healthcare policies. I want to Preserve Livable Neighborhood Communities. Neighborhoods and the quality of life in them have a direct affect on the viability of our Cities and State. Non Profit agencies’ programs like 'Free to Grow' have a direct effect on developing viable neighborhoods and should be encouraged and promoted at all levels of government. Inclusion of neighborhood residents, local and state governments, non-profit agencies, property owners, developers, realtors, businesses, chambers of commerce, economic development councils and places of worship should all be included in the massive effort of making all neighborhoods, established or new, livable safe communities. I know we all end up being beneficiaries when our neighborhoods are viable. I want to preserve Family prosperity for young and old. Salaries of the working public have not kept pace with current increases in costs of living such as gasoline, utilities and basic living expenses. I believe this puts the burden on policy makers of our state government to be ever vigilant in providing relief to our hard working communities by keeping taxes low. Secure family relationships are directly connected to financial stability. I want to Protect our citizens from undue governmental influence. Eminent domain should never be used to force people off their property to enhance or replace with private development. I want to protect the commitment made to our Nebraskan Veterans, Servicemen and Servicewomen. Their sacrifice is the essence of our freedom. We need to give them the healthcare and education promised to them when they enlisted to protect this country. Many sacrifices are being made today in immediate and extended families. It is our duty as those who benefit from these sacrifices to provide assurances that these promises will be fulfilled. I want to protect our Neighborhoods. Neighborhoods need to have the presence and protection of our police. Crimes of illegal drug manufacturing not only affect current occupants of homes in neighborhoods, but those that follow. We need to have tighter restrictions on Those that violate the drug enforcement laws. These criminals should be held to the highest penalties. Drugs destroy life, families, neighborhoods and communities. I want to Promote our wonderful state. Economic Development is vital to healthy families, neighborhoods, communities, cities and state. The trickle down effect of a good job affects every home. Educating and training our workforce from elementary school upward to higher education is essential to the development of a marketable community. Small business growth and job creation needs to be our top priority. Here are some statistics on small business: Small business represents more than 99.7 percent of all employers, employs more than half of all private sector employees, pay 44.5 percent of total U.S. private payroll and generates 60 to 80 percent of net new jobs annually in the US. It is imperative we recognize these statistics and grow our small business community. Retaining and supporting our communities homegrown small businesses will give us the financial stability our communities need. We need to provide access to services and resources to help individuals start, grow, and succeed in their small business. Educate, encourage, promote and retain our small business sector is key to economic development. In these crucial times of higher costs of living and underemployment it is critical our state leaders are constantly aware of cost savings and efficiencies in our government. Helping families provide for themselves can be aided by savings generated in government. We also mustn't forget to take care of Lincoln so it remains a model to encourage investment in our state. We need to return more of the tax revenue generated by gas tax to maintain the aging infrastructure of tree lined streets in this hub of state government. We should all believe we can make a difference. I know I'm ready to make a difference in the families of the 46th District, Lincoln and Nebraska and make this the greatest place to live. I ask for your support and your vote. It would be a great honor to be the next State Senator from the 46th Legislative District in the Nebraska Legislature. Thank you |
