My Stance: Education

My children benefited greatly from our first class public school education system. A well-funded unsurpassed public education is the best way to achieve social and economic development in our state. Quality public education is known to alleviate the burden on social services. Additionally, a critical learning period for all children is the time from birth until they enter kindergarten. Parents need to recognize they are the first teachers of their children and just the simple sound of their voice at birth can start the development of their child’s brain.

In today’s knowledge-based global economy, nothing is more vital to companies than the ability to find, and employ, an increasingly well-educated work force. What we do or don't do as individuals, educators, and collectively as society can impede a child's success in learning.

I do believe the state has an over-reliance on property taxes to fund education. This is placing an ever-growing burden on small business owners, small farm families, seniors on fixed incomes, and thousands of hardworking families across Nebraska who are struggling to afford escalating property taxes. I understand tax payers are struggling to make ends meet. I am one of you. We own our home and rent a space for our small business. The cost of higher property taxes is unfriendly to our business environment. Small businesses cannot prosper due to the high costs of rent, as a result of the high property tax rates.

I understand the desire of you to have some sense of control over the tax burden you are experiencing. However I do not think it wise to assume the “Stop Over Spending” (SOS) initiative is the answer to your concerns. I want you to have the confidence in my abilities to work very hard with others to relieve the tax burden while still preserving good services our citizens need. To prove to you I am sincere, I use the example that I have spent less than any other first place winner in any of the races. I can honestly say I have EARNED my votes with hard work. When I take my seat in the legislature, I will make sure your tax dollars are spent just as carefully and still accomplish great things for individuals and families in our district, community, city and state.
