My Stance: Neighborhood Communities

Two years ago a representative of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln approached me, as the chair of the Neighborhood Roundtable, to convey information about proposed LB 892 repealing the home repair tax. I started a campaign encouraging neighborhoods to write letters of support for this legislation. This past legislative session the bill was passed as part of a comprehensive tax relief package. It is with this type of legislation we encourage reinvestment in our core neighborhoods.

Neighborhoods and the quality of life in them have a direct affect on the viability of our cities and state. Non Profit agencies’ programs like 'Free to Grow' have a positive outcome on developing viable neighborhoods and should be encouraged and promoted at all levels of government. Inclusion of neighborhood residents, local and state governments, non-profit agencies, property owners, developers, realtors, businesses, chambers of commerce, economic development councils and places of worship should all be included in the massive effort of making all neighborhoods, established or new, livable safe communities.

I believe as well, neighborhoods need to develop a partnership with our public safety officials in a shared responsibility to achieve security for our neighborhoods and businesses. Strengthening the bond between police personnel and community in non-enforcement situations, results in building familiarity and trust, are essential to forming collaborative partnerships. Programs similar to the Neighborhood Watch program and Urban Community Improvement Programs have proven to have a positive domino effect in communities. Last but not least as the 46th District’s next Legislator, in able to protect our residents and children in our neighborhoods, I would propose tighter restrictions on those that violate the drug enforcement laws and are sexual predators of our children. These criminals should be held to the highest penalties.
